    An Interactive Decision Support System for Scheduling Fighter Pilot Training

    The U.S. Air Force is developing Modular Aircraft Support System (MASS) program to replace the current Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE). AGE supplies electricity, nitrogen, hydraulics and other support equipment to maintenance activities at the flight line. Current AGE makes up one-third of the deployment footprint. AGE is also mostly aircraft specific, and has reliability problems. The MASS alternative focuses on modularity based on a plug-and-play approach. The technological improvements and possible reduction in the footprint make MASS a good alternative. The AF has to determine now, whether MASS can supply similar functionality and decrease the deployment footprint to theater, while not degrading logistics support for the missions. The primary focus in this thesis is to determine the important factors that have impacts on Flying Scheduling Effectiveness (FSE), to decrease the footprint related to the important factors and MASS substitution. The maintenance requirements are examined for the flight line support of 3 types of aircrafts (F16CJ, F15C, and F15E) sent to the theater for the Aerospace Expeditionary Force (AEF) and for 7-days period. This thesis re-engineers the AWESIM model created by O Fearna (1999) and extended by Festejo (2000), into ARENA software. The use of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with simulation is introduced

    Failure Mechanism of True 2D Granular Flows

    Most previous experimental investigations of two-dimensional (2D) granular column collapses have been conducted using three-dimensional (3D) granular materials in narrow horizontal channels (i.e., quasi-2D condition). Our recent research on 2D granular column collapses by using 2D granular materials (i.e., aluminum rods) has revealed results that differ markedly from those reported in the literature. We assume a 2D column with an initial height of h0 and initial width of d0, a defined as their ratio (a =h0/d0), a final height of h , and maximum run-out distance of d . The experimental data suggest that for the low a regime (a <0.65) the ratio of the final height to initial height is 1. However, for the high a regime (a >0.65), the ratio of a to (d-d0)/d0, h0/h , or d/d0 is expressed by power-law relations. In particular, the following power-function ratios (h0/h=1.42a^2/3 and d/d0=4.30a^0.72) are proposed for every a >0.65. In contrast, the ratio (d-d0)/d0=3.25a^0.96 only holds for 0.65< a1.5. In addition, the influence of ground contact surfaces (hard or soft beds) on the final run-out distance and destruction zone of the granular column under true 2D conditions is investigated.Comment: 8 page

    Suppression of the nuclear rainbow in the inelastic nucleus-nucleus scattering

    The nuclear rainbow observed in the elastic α\alpha-nucleus and light heavy-ion scattering is proven to be due to the refraction of the scattering wave by a deep, attractive real optical potential. The nuclear rainbow pattern, established as a broad oscillation of the Airy minima in the elastic cross section, originates from an interference of the refracted far-side scattering amplitudes. It is natural to expect a similar rainbow pattern also in the inelastic scattering of a nucleus-nucleus system that exhibits a pronounced rainbow pattern in the elastic channel. Although some feature of the nuclear rainbow in the inelastic nucleus-nucleus scattering was observed in experiment, the measured inelastic cross sections exhibit much weaker rainbow pattern, where the Airy oscillation is suppressed and smeared out. To investigate this effect, a novel method of the near-far decomposition of the inelastic scattering amplitude is proposed to explicitly reveal the coupled partial-wave contributions to the inelastic cross section. Using the new decomposition method, our coupled channel analysis of the elastic and inelastic 12^{12}C+12^{12}C and 16^{16}O+12^{12}C scattering at the refractive energies shows unambiguously that the suppression of the nuclear rainbow pattern in the inelastic scattering cross section is caused by a destructive interference of the partial waves of different multipoles. However, the inelastic scattering remains strongly refractive in these cases, where the far-side scattering is dominant at medium and large angles like that observed in the elastic scattering.Comment: Dedicated to the memory of Jacques Raynal; to be published in EPJ

    A reduced basis approach for variational problems with stochastic parameters: Application to heat conduction with variable Robin coefficient

    In this work, a Reduced Basis (RB) approach is used to solve a large number of boundary value problems parametrized by a stochastic input – expressed as a Karhunen–Loève expansion – in order to compute outputs that are smooth functionals of the random solution fields. The RB method proposed here for variational problems parametrized by stochastic coefficients bears many similarities to the RB approach developed previously for deterministic systems. However, the stochastic framework requires the development of new a posteriori estimates for “statistical” outputs – such as the first two moments of integrals of the random solution fields; these error bounds, in turn, permit efficient sampling of the input stochastic parameters and fast reliable computation of the outputs in particular in the many-query context.United States.     Cultural evolution in Vietnam’s early 20th century: a Bayesian networks analysis of Franco-Chinese house designs

    The study of cultural evolution has taken on an increasingly interdisciplinary and diverse approach in explicating phenomena of cultural transmission and adoptions. Inspired by this computational movement, this study uses Bayesian networks analysis, combining both the frequentist and the Hamiltonian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach, to investigate the highly representative elements in the cultural evolution of a Vietnamese city’s architecture in the early 20th century. With a focus on the façade design of 68 old houses in Hanoi’s Old Quarter (based on 78 data lines extracted from 248 photos), the study argues that it is plausible to look at the aesthetics, architecture, and designs of the house façade to find traces of cultural evolution in Vietnam, which went through more than six decades of French colonization and centuries of sociocultural influence from China. The in-depth technical analysis, though refuting the presumed model on the probabilistic dependency among the variables, yields several results, the most notable of which is the strong influence of Buddhism over the decorations of the house façade. Particularly, in the top 5 networks with the best Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) scores and p\u3c0.05, the variable for decorations (DC) always has a direct probabilistic dependency on the variable B for Buddhism. The paper then checks the robustness of these models using Hamiltonian MCMC method and find the posterior distributions of the models’ coefficients all satisfy the technical requirement. Finally, this study suggests integrating Bayesian statistics in the social sciences in general and for the study of cultural evolution and architectural transformation in particular

    Multidimensional copula models for parallel development of the US bond market indices

    Stock and bond markets co-movements have been studied by many researchers. The object of our investigation is the development of three U.S. investment grade corporate bond indices. We concluded that the optimal 3D as well as partial pairwise 2D models are in the Student class with 2 degrees of freedom (and thus very heavy tails) and exhibit very high values of tail dependence coefficients. Hence the considered bond indices do not represent suitable components of a well-diversified investment portfolio. On the other hand, they could make good candidates for underlying assets of derivative instruments
